Pathology Residency Program | Washington D.C. | MedStar Health

The MedStar Health—Georgetown University Hospital Residency Program in Pathology

Our program is a four-year categorical program with a broad depth of educational opportunities within the MedStar Health system and at our affiliate sites.

Residents complete both Anatomic Pathology (AP) and Clinical Pathology (CP) rotations each year of training, and experience diverse and comprehensive case materials.

Anatomic services include general surgical pathology, cytopathology, renal and transplant pathology, and the post mortem examination. Clinical services include transfusion medicine, microbiology, hematopathology, molecular diagnostics, and general clinical chemistry. Patient care values include reliability, professionalism, and respect.

Why train here

Academic Excellence

We strive to train pathologists who are competent in all aspects of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. The trained pathologist from MedStar Georgetown should capably perform the duties of his or her specialty in any clinical or academic setting to the best of their ability with professionalism and integrity.

In addition, graduates will apply fundamental managerial principles in the operation of a laboratory and use their background in evidence-based medicine and research techniques to make decisions regarding new data and testing procedures for better patient care.

The anatomic and clinical pathology program is categorical with a broad depth of educational opportunities within the MedStar Health system and at our affiliate sites. Residents complete both AP and CP rotations each year of training and experience diverse and comprehensive case materials.

Graduates will use their anatomic skills to make accurate diagnoses, communicate with their fellow clinicians, have the ability to recognize their personal limitations, and seek proper consultation when necessary.

We hope to not only instruct our residents at the highest level, but also to encourage and inspire enthusiasm for a successful career in pathology.

Some of the key features and benefits of the program are:

  • ACGME-accredited four-year AP/CP pathology residency

  • Robust case load and paid electives nationwide

  • 12 residents (three per class) and two fellows

  • Generous compensation and resident benefits

  • Diverse group of residents representing eight different countries

  • Diagnostic services and specialization in the molecular testing of a variety of diseases

  • Skull base surgery, rhinology and allergy, and sleep medicine and surgery specialties
